Nit Bits: Weird & Wonderful Facts
🪳 1. Lice have been around for over 5 million years!
Head lice have evolved alongside humans — even ancient Egyptian mummies have been found with nits in their hair.
🥚 2. A female louse can lay up to 100 eggs in her lifetime.
That's why it only takes one to start a full-on infestation!
🦠 3. Lice don’t spread disease — just discomfort.
Unlike some other parasites, head lice aren’t known to carry any viruses or bacteria.
💧 4. Lice can hold their breath for several hours.
That’s why swimming won’t drown them — they just cling tight and wait it out.
🚫 5. Lice don’t care how clean your hair is.
They’re just after blood, not hygiene. Anyone with a scalp can get lice — clean or not.
🐜 6. Lice have claws shaped like tiny crab pincers.
These help them grip hair shafts and move fast — about 23 cm (9 inches) per minute!
👃 7. They dislike certain scents.
Strong essential oils like tea tree, neem, eucalyptus, and lavender may help repel them (but don’t rely on this alone!).
🔍 8. You’re more likely to see the eggs than the lice.
Nits stay glued to the hair shaft and are often easier to spot than the fast-moving adult lice.
🧢 9. Lice can live off the scalp for up to 48 hours.
That’s why it’s still worth washing pillowcases, hats, and brushes during an outbreak.
💡 10. “Nit-Picking” is a real job — and a real phrase!
The term comes from the meticulous removal of nits one by one, a very old, very real part of history and still a vital job today! Like Me😁
