Your Weekly & As-Needed To-Do List for a Lice-Free Home
Use this checklist to reduce the chance of reinfestation and keep your home lice-safe after treatment.
Tie back long hair or braid it, especially before school or childcare
Spray hair lightly with lice-repelling spray (tea tree, neem, lavender-based)
Avoid head-to-head contact (during play, selfies, naps)
Keep personal hair items (brushes, clips) separated
Wash all pillowcases, sheets, and blankets in hot water (60°C or above)
Dry thoroughly on high heat for 20+ minutes
Repeat for sleepover items (swags, stuffed toys, sleeping bags)
Seal non-washable soft items in garbage bags for 48 hours
Vacuum pillows and mattress surfaces
Wipe down school bags with soapy water or disinfectant wipes
Place hats, scarves, and hoodies in dryer on high heat
Remind kids not to share hats, headphones, or hooded jumpers
Clean bike helmets or shared gear with a cloth and alcohol spray
Bag up soft toys for 48 hours or tumble-dry on high heat
Vacuum lounges, car seats, and cushions
Remove and wash slipcovers or throws weekly during treatment phase
Soak brushes, combs, clips, and headbands in boiling water for 10+ minutes
Use a separate nit comb per child (do not share)
Clean nit comb with old toothbrush + boiling water after each use
Vacuum headrests and booster seats
Wipe down seatbelts and car upholstery
Keep hair tied back during car travel
Use a lice-repelling spray daily with:
Tea Tree Oil
Lavender oil
Eucalyptus
Do a weekly head check with conditioner + nit comb
Keep siblings’ items separate (hats, bedding, towels)
Reinforce no-sharing rules for hats, towels, brushes
Stay consistent for 2 weeks after any treatment
Encourage schools to notify you of outbreaks early
